Beginning Food Storage

Food Bucket PicIf you are like me, you have a desire to start storing some food but simply have no idea how to get started. What kind of food is best to store? What is the nutritional value of such foods? Where do we put all of this food? Well, the thought process behind starting food storage could be overwhelming and cause a person to give up without trying, so it is important to start this ongoing journey with a single step. The first step to storing food is quite simply to find containers to store them in!

The most common method is to store food in is the classic 5 gallon bucket. It isn't very hard to find these in food-grade models on the internet for sale, but you are likely to experience sticker shock. Just a brief search I conducted yielded such prices as $15 for one, $32 for a set of 3, and some even going for as much as $22 a piece. No wonder so many people are hesitant to start food storage!

It is possible that you don't need to purchase these buckets at all. Instead of paying big money for the buckets you need, one place you can go to find some potentially free buckets is your local grocery store. You see, your local grocery store's bakery typically orders icing by the bucket. When they are done with the buckets, they likely just throw them away, so head over to your local grocery store and give it a shot! You might score some great goods at little to no cost.
